Commissioned by the North Sea Port, we are building an 800-metre-long new quay at the Quarleshaven in Vlissingen-Oost. The Bulk Terminal Zeeland company can then expand its operations. This will also lengthen the quay at Shipyard Reimerswaal.

The new quay at Bulk Terminal Zeeland in the Sloe area replaces the old quay that is being demolished. The hydraulic engineers consortium Hakkers and De Klerk, both located in Werkendam, started construction of the new quay in early 2022. The new 800-metre-long quay will be completed by the end of 2024. This will make the quay on the south side of Quarleshaven a total of 1,200 metres long.  This will allow the Bulk Terminal Zeeland transshipment company to expand its quay from 250 metres to 440 metres and provide more space for transshipment. The new quay also ensures that an additional 10 hectares of land can be allocated to Bulk Terminal Zeeland. Ample space remains between the terminal and Shipyard Reimerswaal for a new company that wants to develop operations there. The entire project will be completed in a manner that minimises disruption to the companies involved. Normal operations will only be interrupted for two days.

Quay for different types of ship and business

The docks of the new quay will allow different types of seagoing and inland vessel to dock, such as project cargo vessels, hoisting vessels, bulk carriers, fruit carriers, barges and tankers with a draught of up to 12.5 metres. Furthermore, the quay will be built to be future-proof because the water depth can later be increased by two metres. The quay will be reinforced and made suitable for a quay load of 5 tons per square metre.  Hein van Laar, Commercial Director of Hakkers comments: “After previous successful Hakkers and De Klerk projects in Flushing, we are particularly proud to realise this new project for North Sea Port. It shows our strength as a structural hydraulic engineer that has all necessary disciplines in-house.”  In broad terms, the work consists of installing over 240 tubular piles with intermediate sheet piles and over 600 screw injection anchors. This involves over 14,000 tons of steel, over 2,000 cubic metres of concrete and over 8,000 square metres of paving. Furthermore, nearly 600,000 cubic metres of earth needs to be moved.
